Emirates Old Trafford has been shortlisted in two categories for the ‘Sports Business Awards 2018’.
The venue, home to Lancashire Cricket Club, has been nominated in both the ‘Best Operations Team’ and the ‘Best Non-Match Day use of Venue’ categories for hosting the ‘One Love Manchester’ benefit concert.
The concert, which was held in memory of those affected by the attack in Manchester on Monday 22 May, raised more than £2.5 million and was viewed by over 14.5 million people on BBC Television, was staged at Emirates Old Trafford, with just over a week’s notice.
Net ticket proceeds of the show went directly to the ‘We Love Manchester Emergency Fund’ which was set up by Manchester City Council in partnership with the British Red Cross, in aid of grieving families and victims of the horrific attack.
The 50,000 capacity ground successfully delivered the ‘One Love Manchester’ benefit concert, just eight days after hosting a capacity 50,000 crowd for the Courteeners, in the midst of a busy cricket season.
Emirates Old Trafford’s Operations Director, Anthony Mundy, describes how the venue’s team came together to organise the events. He said: “The actual planning for ‘One Love Manchester’ was probably only five days.
"We had two events in that period - with Courteeners on May 27 and then the One Love Manchester gig - it took five days to plan what would normally take us five months so. The plans were robust and we were good to go. We carried out the operation without any particular hitches. Everything that we planned, and had gone through, worked."
Emirates Old Trafford Sales and Marketing Director, Justin Hopwood, said: “The shortlisting for the Sports Business Awards for the ‘One Love Manchester’ benefit concert is testament to everyone’s efforts both at the Club and the wider stakeholder group in the Trafford region and city of Manchester, as everyone played a vital role.
“Everyone’s hearts and thoughts were with, and will always remain with, those affected by what happened on the 22 May. We’ve got a hugely talented, experienced and emotionally charged set of individuals. We didn’t have to ask an awful lot from people, as everyone just got into the mode of what was a very busy, stressful, emotional and rewarding time – whilst always remembering why we were doing it and what it was for.”
